software development

Since getting my hands on my first PC in 1982 (a TRS-80 Color Computer), computers and programming computers have been my foremost interest in life. 64K of RAM, tape drives, BASIC, Hot CoCo magazine ... those were the days!

I maintained my interest in computing through high-school, and into university, graduating with a B.Sc. in Maths and Computer Science from Adelaide University in 1994. For next 10 years I worked for a number of different companies , spanning start-ups through to multi-nationals, and I was fortunate enough to be exposed to a wide range of languages and technologies.

Since 2004 I've been been self-employed as an independent software consultant / analyst, and work with my business partner Gavin Horne under the banner of our shared company Adaptive Software Solutions.

After dabbling in BASIC when I was young, my professional career started with development of a large-scale database project written in Borland C++ and utilising the Borland Database Engine, with Paradox as the back end. This system is still in daily use in hundreds of schools across Australia, some 16 years after it was deployed.

Since then I've been exposed to a wide range of languages and technologies, including Delphi, C#, .NET, HTML, MySQL, MS SQL Server ... and many more.

I've actively avoided going into management, working for Defence or Defence-related companies, and am strongly opposed to software patents.
